Julia Jeans ✂️ Fabric Recommendations

Dear readers,

One of the best things about the Julia Jeans is how versatile they are depending on your fabric choice. Whether you’re leaning into the slouchy, lived-in 90s vibe or aiming for a more dressed-up, trouser-style silhouette, the fabric you pick will set the tone for your entire look.

To help you make the most of your Julia, I’ve rounded up some of my favorite denim options, including two featured fabrics from Yardblox, who generously sponsored the launch and are partnering on a giveaway (more on that below 👇).

The Showcase Fabric: Hemp and Organic Cotton Blend from Yardblox (My Sample)

Weight: 6.7 oz / 227 gsm
Drape: Soft and fluid
Look: Casual, vintage-inspired

This is the fabric I used for my own sample, and I couldn’t be happier with the result. It has a beautiful texture thanks to the slubby hemp fibers, and a washed-in look that gives it an instant worn-in feel. The lighter weight makes it perfect for Julia's relaxed fit, the wide leg moves beautifully, and the adjustable waistband still holds up nicely.

It’s also breathable and sustainable, making it a win all around.

100% Cotton Denim from Yardblox

Weight: 8.2 oz / 278 gsm
Drape: Medium
Look: Crisp and classic

If you want your Julia Jeans to feel more like true, structured denim, this is a great option. It’s still soft enough to wear comfortably, but the added weight brings more structure and presence to the finished silhouette.

Cotton/Wool Japanese Denim

Weight: 7 oz / 237 gsm
Drape: Soft with structure
Look: Elevated, luxe

This is a perfect choice if you're going for a more polished pair of jeans. The wool content adds body without making it bulky, and the surface is beautifully smooth. This fabric is ideal for transitional weather and can be dressed up more easily than standard denim.

There are great options at DenimLab, a Netherlands-based denim deadstock specialist. One note: Japanese denim often comes in narrower widths, so double-check your yardage when ordering.

Trouser-Style Cotton Denim

Weight: 6.2 oz / 210 gsm
Drape: Light and flowing
Look: Refined and subtle

Looking to turn Julia into a breezy wide-leg trouser you could wear to work? This lightweight cotton denim is the answer. It presses crisply and drapes softly, giving a more tailored look while still being very easy to sew. I especially recommend it if you want to pair your Julias with heels or dressy blouses.

Pocketing & Interfacing

To support your denim and give structure to key areas, I recommend:

  • Plain cotton muslin for pocket bags (or printed cotton if you are more fun than me!)
  • Fusible interfacing for waistbands and fly pieces
  • Fusible stay tape along the zipper area and pocket openings

These small details make a huge difference in the overall finish and durability of your jeans.

Thread & Hardware

For one pair of Julia Jeans, you’ll need:

  • 1 metal zipper
  • 4 spools of regular thread (for seams and overlocking)
  • 2 spools of topstitching thread
  • 5 metal buttons

You can match or contrast your topstitching depending on the look you want — I love tonal thread for subtle elegance and golden contrast thread for a more traditional jeans finish.

Fabric Requirements

Make sure to prewash your fabric before cutting. Denim will often shrink and soften, and you will definitely want to do that before hemming to your perfect length.
