Dear readers,
One of the most important decisions when sewing the Devon Skirt is your fabric choice.
The pattern is designed to work across a range of woven fabrics, and each one will give you a slightly different result. The structure of the pleats, the way the skirt moves, even how dressed up or casual it feels all come down to the fabric.
Here is a guide to help you choose.

Cotton Poplin
If you want a crisp, clean silhouette, cotton poplin is a great place to start.
It holds the pleats beautifully and gives the skirt a more architectural look. At the same time, it remains breathable and comfortable, which makes it perfect for everyday wear.
Chambray
Chambray gives a softer, more relaxed version of Devon.
You still get structure, but with a bit more ease and movement. It is a good option if you want something casual that still feels considered.
Linen
Linen brings texture and a slightly more effortless feel.
The pleats will be softer and less defined, but the skirt will move beautifully. Perfect for warmer weather and a more laid-back wardrobe.
Linen Blends
Linen blends are a great balance between structure and softness.
Blended with fibers like cotton or viscose, they keep some of the crispness while adding drape and reducing wrinkling. This is often the most versatile option.
Lightweight Wool Suiting
If you want a more elevated version of Devon, lightweight wool suiting is a beautiful choice.
It gives the skirt a refined look with fluid movement, making it easy to dress up while still remaining comfortable.
There is no wrong choice here. The pattern is designed to adapt, so you can make Devon more casual or more refined depending on your fabric.

I purchased the Devon skirt pattern and I am having real difficulty understanding how the pleats are constructed as the symbols are confusing and there is hardly any info in the instructions. Please can you assist. thanks
Hi Delphine
I’ve purchased your Devon skirt pattern and started working on it. I’ve sewn for 60 years but cannot figure out the symbols for the pleats. I haven’t made a pleated skirt since I was in high school in 1968. lol
I’ve kind of made up a way to make them but would love some help because I want to make more of these. Thank you. Katherine
